S.C. Teachers’ Workshops and Tour

From Tuesday, June 14, through Thursday, June 16, the S.C. Forestry Foundation will host S.C. Teachers’ Workshops and Tour at the S.C. Forestry Commission (Harbison State Forest), located at 5600 Broad River Road, in Columbia. Following the comprehensive educational workshops, a four-day tour of forests and forest industry sites located in South Carolina will take place from Monday, June 20, through Thursday, June 23, in Newberry and surrounding areas.

The purpose of the experience is to provide an unbiased look into the impact sustainable forestry has on the state’s economy, environment and quality of life, and to equip teachers to take that knowledge into the classroom. Key workshop topics include forest management; sustainable forestry, ecosystem management and biodiversity; wildlife conservation, including endangered species protection, forest product production, including harvesting; and processing.

As a part of the experience, teachers are trained in the use of Project Learning Tree program materials and learn from forest industry professionals about current forest issues and sustainable forest management practices. The tour includes trips for teachers to various forest product mills, publicly and privately owned forests, special forest heritage sites, and forest harvesting operations.
