Halotherapy and the Coronavirus

Mar 31, 2020 06:51PM ● By Billy Briggs
Halotherapy has long been used by people after flying or traveling. Salt's natural absorbent, anti-microbial and anti-bacterial properties can help clear out the respiratory system of anything you might have breathed in. Small particles in the lungs are surrounded by salt—becoming large enough to more easily expectorate. Another health property of salt is that it is serves as an anti-bacterial agent inside the body, just the same as outside of the body. For this reason, salt has been used as a disinfectant for thousands of years. Salt is also anti-inflammatory, so it can reduce inflammation inside the lungs’ breathing passages, thus making it easier to breathe.

Let’s be clear … there is no known cure or vaccine yet for the coronavirus, other than one’s own immune system (eventually … in many cases) successfully fighting back. That said, the current health crisis does highlight and underscore the importance of immune system health in general and the need to maintain a healthy and clean respiratory system.

So, what are the next steps? Halotherapy is increasingly seen as an important way to improve health and minimize potential challenges brought on by diseases such as colds, flus and ear infections. It is also one of the fastest growing new modalities being included in spa treatments around the world. Salt spa therapy benefits include improved resistance to respiratory diseases and a strengthened immune system. Salt particles actually have anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Dry salt particles can also absorb foreign pathogens in the respiratory tract. Other therapy benefits include the elimination of toxins from the body, natural detoxification, and lymphatic system support.

With all the talk about the coronavirus and the health precautions to take, it’s great to know that halotherapy can strengthen one’s respiratory immune system; improve respiratory hygiene; and help with coughs, colds and other health issues. Always remember to wash your hands, cough into your elbow, and stay safe. If you have a fever, please seek a medical doctor first.
