Inspiration from a Balloonist …

Apr 03, 2017 03:55PM ● By Annette Briggs (Owner/Publisher)

Greetings readers! I bid you a very warm welcome to the 2017 Natural Awakenings of Columbia Sustainability Earth Day edition. I must say, I am so very proud of the collection of material our team has compiled just for you. From cover to cover, this month’s issue is packed full of very useful and timely information to help us find and lead more sustainable lifestyles—and we must.

The time is now to take better care of our planet and its rich resources. Expanding populations, global modernization and wave upon wave of industrial economic surge have put tremendous pressure on our planet’s natural resources and its ability to successfully support and maintain its fragile eco-systems, on which all life is dependent for survival. Moreover, worldwide deforestation and air and water pollution are still very problematic. As a result, countless plant and animal species continue to face the real possibility of extinction, while, sadly, countless more have simply disappeared forever. Yes, we have a serious problem … and it needs to be addressed. Addressed by whom you might ask? The answer is simple: you and me!

Ordinary people focused and determined to work together to accomplish a specific goal can achieve extraordinary things. The good news is that together we can STILL become real difference makers and impact players in the S.C. communities we live in, and dare I say the world, if we each choose to make necessary and pivotal lifestyle changes. Swiss psychiatrist and balloonist Bertrand Piccard once stated, “In the 21st century, I think the heroes will be the people who will improve the quality of life, fight poverty and introduce more sustainability.” I like this guy … and he’s a balloonist, huh!

To be fair, progress has been made, but much more must be done. When practicing sustainability, we preserve more of our natural resources through land protection and energy conservation—benefits to us and future generations. In addition, by reducing the amount of waste produced by engaging in recycling, composting and other great “green” programs, as well as eliminating harmful practices, we minimize the environmental impact, and potentially even save money.

Start your reading journey now and take time to seriously consider where you fit in. We need you on the team! Our earth needs more heroes it can count on.

Happy Earth Day,

Annette Briggs
